For a first luxury safari, choose Tanzania if you want the Serengeti’s vast scale, the full migration cycle (including calving) and the Ngorongoro Crater. Choose Kenya if you want shorter travel times from Nairobi, the Masai Mara’s private conservancies with off-road driving and night drives, and an easy add-on to other Kenyan areas.
This guide compares the two for luxury travellers. For itineraries, see our luxury safaris and luxury Tanzania safaris.

The migration: Tanzania or Kenya?
The herds spend most of the year in Tanzania, moving north into Kenya’s Masai Mara from about July to October. If you are travelling in those months, both countries are excellent. At any other time of year, Tanzania is the place to see the herds. See where to stay in the Serengeti month by month and our Mara River crossings guide.
Crowds
The Masai Mara National Reserve can get busy at crossing points in August. The private conservancies bordering it limit vehicle numbers and offer a much more exclusive experience. In Tanzania, the northern Serengeti is quieter than the Mara, while the central Serengeti can be busy in peak months.
Ease of travel
Kenya is slightly easier for a short trip. Nairobi is a major hub with direct flights from many cities, and light aircraft reach the Mara in under an hour. Tanzania’s northern circuit starts at Kilimanjaro International Airport, and the Serengeti is usually one or two flights further.
Luxury lodges
Both countries have outstanding lodges. In Tanzania: Singita Grumeti, &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Four Seasons Serengeti, Nomad Lamai and Asilia Namiri Plains. In Kenya: Angama Mara, Mahali Mzuri, Cottar’s 1920s Camp, and camps in Laikipia. See the most romantic safari lodges in East Africa.
Can you combine them?
Yes. A 12 to 14 night trip can include the Serengeti and the Mara or Laikipia. Crossing the land border near the Mara usually isn’t practical for visitors, so combinations usually route via Kilimanjaro and Nairobi by air.
Our recommendation for a first safari
- Travelling July to October: either country; Tanzania’s northern Serengeti for fewer vehicles, or a Kenyan conservancy for convenience.
- Travelling November to June: Tanzania, for the migration in the south and centre.
- Only 5 to 6 nights: Kenya is slightly easier.
- Want the Ngorongoro Crater or Zanzibar: Tanzania.
