Tanzania Family Safari in the School Holidays: What to Expect by Season

School holidays fit Tanzania’s safari seasons well. The northern-hemisphere summer holidays (July and August) match the Mara River crossings and the dry season. The Christmas holidays match the herds arriving in the southern Serengeti ahead of calving. Easter usually falls in the long rains, which are quieter, greener and better value.

This guide explains what each holiday period offers and how to plan. For itineraries, see our family safaris.

Summer holidays: the classic family safari

July and August bring dry, clear weather, the best game viewing, and the Mara River crossings. It is also the busiest and most expensive time.

Our tips:

Christmas holidays: green and festive

In late December, the herds are gathering on the southern plains before calving. Landscapes are green after the short rains, and camps put on festive dinners.

Note that many lodges charge festive supplements and set minimum stays over Christmas and New Year.

February half-term: calving season

A week in February can put your family on the plains during peak calving, with newborn wildebeest and plenty of predators. See our calving season guide.

Easter holidays: quieter and greener

Easter usually falls during the long rains. Expect showers, fewer vehicles and some closed camps, but also good offers. See our Serengeti green season guide.

Family tips for any season

  1. Use a private vehicle, often required for children under about 12.
  2. Book family suites or a villa. See private safari villas for families.
  3. Check the lodge’s minimum age. See the best age for a family safari.
  4. Plan malaria prevention with your doctor. See malaria-free vs malaria-area family safaris.
  5. Finish at the beach. Zanzibar is a short flight away. See the best Zanzibar resorts after a safari.
