Where do the flights go from?
Balloon flights launch from three main areas of the Serengeti:
- Central Serengeti (Seronera): available all year, with strong resident wildlife.
- Western Serengeti: good from about May to July, when the herds pass through.
- Southern Serengeti: good from about December to March, during the calving season.
Your lodge needs to be within reach of a launch site for an early pickup. We plan your lodges with this in mind if you want to fly.
What happens on the morning
- Pickup before dawn. Expect to leave your lodge at about 5am.
- Inflation and safety briefing at the launch site as the sky gets light.
- About one hour in the air, drifting at treetop height and higher over the plains. Pilots use the wind and altitude to follow wildlife where they can.
- Landing and a bush breakfast, often with a sparkling toast, laid out on the plains.
- A game drive back to your lodge or on to your next activity.
Baskets usually carry up to about 16 passengers in compartments. Children normally need to be at least 7 years old.
Is a balloon safari worth it?
It is worth it if:
- You are in the Serengeti for three nights or more, so a morning off game drives isn’t a big trade-off.
- The migration is nearby. Seeing the herds from above is unforgettable.
- You are celebrating something. Many couples add it to a honeymoon safari.
It may not be worth it if:
- You have only one or two nights in the Serengeti.
- You are nervous about heights or early starts.
- You are travelling with children under 7.
Tips
- Book early. Flights have limited seats, especially from July to September and in February. Booking 8 to 10 months ahead is sensible for peak dates.
- Fly early in your stay. If a flight is cancelled because of wind or weather, you have time to reschedule.
- Dress in layers. It is cold before sunrise and warms quickly.
- Bring a small camera or phone with a wrist strap. Large lenses are awkward in the basket.
