For most luxury safaris, Tarangire is the better choice. It is much larger, quieter and outstanding for elephants from July to October, and it has some of northern Tanzania’s best private lodges. Lake Manyara is small and scenic and works best as a half-day visit on the way to the Ngorongoro Crater.
Here is how the two compare and when you might choose Manyara instead. For full trips, see our luxury Tanzania safari itineraries.

Why choose Tarangire
- Elephants. In the dry season, the Tarangire River draws hundreds of elephants, one of the largest concentrations in Tanzania.
- Space. It is less busy than the Ngorongoro Crater or central Serengeti, especially in the private areas on its borders.
- Private experiences. Lodges in the Burunge Wildlife Management Area offer walking safaris, night drives and fly camping, which the national parks don’t allow.
- Scenery. Ancient baobabs and river valleys make it one of the most photogenic parks in Tanzania.
Why choose Lake Manyara
- It’s on the way. It sits beside the main road to the Ngorongoro Crater, so it is easy to add as a half-day.
- Forest and lake. The groundwater forest, with baboons and blue monkeys, is a contrast to the open plains elsewhere.
- Birds. The lake draws flamingos and pelicans at certain times of year.
- Tree-climbing lions. Manyara is famous for them, but sightings are unpredictable. Don’t plan a trip around them.
Our recommendation
On a 9 to 10 night trip, spend 2 nights in Tarangire and skip Manyara, or visit it for a morning if you are driving to the crater anyway. On a shorter trip, fly straight to the Serengeti and use your time there.
If you are staying on the crater rim, a stop at Manyara on the drive up adds variety without an extra night.
See our 10-day luxury Tanzania itinerary for how Tarangire fits into a full trip.
Park fees
Both parks are run by Tanzania National Parks and have lower daily fees than the Serengeti. Private areas such as Burunge charge their own conservation fees, which are usually included in your lodge rate. See our Tanzania park fees guide.
FAQs
Is Tarangire worth visiting?
Yes, especially from June to October, when elephant numbers peak. It is also quieter than the better-known parks.
Can I see tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara?
Sometimes, but they are rarely seen. Lions climb trees in several parks, including Tarangire and the Serengeti.
How many days do I need in Tarangire?
Two nights is ideal, giving you a full day plus a morning and an afternoon drive.
Is Tarangire good in the rainy season?
It is quieter and greener, and many elephants disperse. It is still worthwhile, but it is at its best in the dry season.
