Mozambique vs Zanzibar vs Seychelles: Best Beach After a Safari

Zanzibar is the easiest and best-value beach after a Tanzania or Kenya safari. Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago is the natural choice after a South African safari. The Seychelles has the most dramatic granite islands and top-end private-island resorts, but it takes longer to reach from the safari areas.

This guide compares the three for luxury travellers. For itineraries, see our safari and beach holidays.

Zanzibar

Best for: anyone on a Tanzania safari who wants an easy transfer, variety and culture. Short flights from the Serengeti and Arusha, a range of resorts from boutique to private island, and Stone Town’s history all make it the default choice.

Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago

Best for: travellers combining the Sabi Sand or Kruger with a remote beach. The archipelago is a marine national park with sandbanks, dunes and dhow sailing. It is one of the few places in the region where dugongs are still seen.

Access is usually via Johannesburg or a light-aircraft flight to Vilanculos, then a helicopter or boat transfer. See Singita Sabi Sand vs Singita Kruger for a safari to pair with it.

The Seychelles

Best for: honeymooners who want dramatic scenery and exclusive private islands, and don’t mind a longer journey. Flights from East Africa usually connect via Nairobi, Addis Ababa or a Gulf hub, so it takes most of a day.

The Seychelles is also a good choice from April to May, when Zanzibar and northern Tanzania are wet, though its own weather varies by island and season.

The Seychelles has more dramatic scenery and more exclusive private islands. Zanzibar is much easier to reach from a Tanzania safari, offers better value and has more culture.

Is Mozambique safe for a beach holiday?

The Bazaruto Archipelago and Vilanculos area in the south are established tourist destinations. Check current government advice before booking, as parts of northern Mozambique are affected by conflict.

Can I combine a safari with Mauritius?

Yes. Mauritius is well connected to Johannesburg and Nairobi, and it has many family-friendly resorts.
