Safari Then Beach: How Many Nights of Each?

For most travellers, the best split is 6 to 8 nights on safari followed by 4 nights on the beach. Do the safari first: early starts and long days in the bush make the beach feel earned, and you fly home rested.

Below is our suggested split for different trip lengths, and when to change it. For complete trips, see our safari and beach holidays.

Suggested splits by trip length

Total nights Safari Beach Notes
8 5 3 The minimum for both; focus the safari on one or two areas
10 6 or 7 3 or 4 Our most popular length
12 8 4 Room for the crater and two Serengeti areas
14 9 or 10 4 or 5 A relaxed pace; ideal for honeymoons
16+ 10 to 11 5 to 6 Add a second beach or Stone Town

Why safari first?

  • Recovery. Game drives start early, around 6am. A few beach days afterwards let you rest before the long flight home.
  • Jet lag. Early starts on safari work well with jet lag from Europe or the Americas.
  • Luggage. Beach clothes stay in your bag until the end, and you can send safari dust off in the laundry.

The main reason to do the beach first is if you arrive very tired after a long journey, or if flight schedules work better that way.

How many nights on safari?

  • Minimum 5 nights if you are flying to the Serengeti from the coast.
  • 7 to 8 nights to include Tarangire or the Ngorongoro Crater plus two Serengeti areas.
  • At least 3 nights per camp to reduce time spent travelling.

How many nights on the beach?

  • 3 nights is enough for a short rest.
  • 4 nights is the sweet spot for most travellers.
  • 5 or more nights suits honeymooners and families, or those combining two beach areas.

Popular combinations

Timing tips

  • Allow for light-aircraft schedules. Flights from the Serengeti to Zanzibar often go via Arusha, so plan for part of a day.
  • Check weather on both legs. April and May are wet in both northern Tanzania and Zanzibar.
  • Book the beach early for July to August and the Christmas holidays.

FAQs

Is it better to do safari or beach first?

Safari first for most travellers. You end the trip rested, and early safari starts help with jet lag.

Is 3 days enough for a safari?

Three nights gives a taste, but for Tanzania we recommend at least 5 to 6 nights to make the flights and fees worthwhile.

Can I do a safari and beach trip in 10 days?

Yes. Six nights on safari and four on the beach works well.
